B&W starts work on 20 50 MW steam turbines for data center power projects

Babcock & Wilcox has signed an agreement with Siemens Energy to commence work on 20 Siemens Energy steam turbine generator sets intended for B&W’s FastPower program for data center power projects. B&W says the turbine sets total 1 GW of generating capacity.

The agreement covers 20 steam turbine generator sets rated at 50 MW each, and B&W says it’s aimed at supporting customers on accelerated timelines. B&W also says this agreement is in addition to a previously announced turbine order.

For data center operators, the key practical point is the scale: a 1 GW block of turbine-generator capacity is utility-class power, and it’s being tied directly to “AI data center customers” and schedule pressure. But “commence work” isn’t the same as on-site installation or commercial operation—this is an early step in turning equipment capacity into delivered megawatts.

“This order secures 1 GW of capacity and further positions us to deliver reliable, high-capacity energy solutions on the accelerated timelines our customers require,” said Brandy Johnson, chief technology officer at Babcock & Wilcox.

“Siemens Energy’s agreement with Babcock & Wilcox to commence work on these steam turbine generator sets reflects a broader trend we are currently seeing in the U.S. market: growing demand for reliable, affordable, and resilient energy infrastructure,” said Tobias Panse, senior vice president of steam turbines and generators for Siemens Energy.
