AVAIO Digital announces 64 MW hyperscale data center project in Madrid

AVAIO Digital has announced plans to build its first data center in Spain, a 64 megawatt (MW) campus located in Algete in the Community of Madrid. The project, named AVAIO Digital Scorpio, is positioned in Madrid’s northern tech corridor and has secured €650 million in capital investment, according to the company. AVAIO Digital claims the facility will address hyperscale requirements, support both cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, and deliver flexible design for varying customer needs.

The project has secured 56.3 MW of clean power supply from Iberdrola, Spain’s leader in power generation and transmission, on top of an initial 8 MW interconnection agreement. According to AVAIO Digital, initial power delivery is scheduled for 2028. The Algete site will provide low-latency connectivity to established datacenter clusters in Alcobendas and Alcala, as well as direct access to Spain’s national fiber network and subsea cables for international markets.

The facility’s design includes intelligent sustainable elements: rainwater recapture, rooftop solar arrays, and a flexible, air-cooled system described by AVAIO Digital as water-efficient. Development will repurpose an old industrial site, and the location is noted as being buffered from residential areas.

The target markets for AVAIO Digital Scorpio are hyperscale operators and clients with demanding AI and cloud computing requirements. The site is expected to create more than 500 jobs during construction and approximately 50 permanent on-site roles once operational, AVAIO Digital claims. The company reports that AVAIO Digital Scorpio forms part of its broader 2 gigawatt (GW) global pipeline, which includes campuses in Northern California, Virginia, Arkansas, and Mississippi, with plans to make almost 450 MW of capacity available by 2027.

Mark McComiskey, CEO of AVAIO Digital, stated, “Madrid is a leading European hub for cloud computing and AI development and we are delighted to partner with the City of Algete to make a significant investment in expanding the region’s digital and energy infrastructure. Spain provides a unique opportunity for hyperscalers to rapidly expand their digital presence in close proximity to established data center markets in a highly sustainable way,”

Pedro Blanco, Project Manager in Spain for AVAIO Digital, said, “This project contributes to consolidating Madrid’s northern datacenter axis and Algete’s emerging position as a datacenter hub. AVAIO’s sustainable design will allow for the re-development of an old industrial site in an environmentally friendly manner. We are very excited about this significant development milestone.”
