iMasons selects Water From Air for data center waste heat-to-water innovation

Infrastructure Masons (iMasons), a global nonprofit dedicated to sustainable digital infrastructure, has selected Water From Air for its Innovation Incubator Program, effective July 2025. Water From Air develops modular systems that produce distilled water by converting low-grade waste heat—specifically from data centers and industrial sites—into clean water, with a focus on deployment in arid regions and areas lacking water infrastructure.

Water From Air reports that its system stands out by using data center waste heat at ambient pressure to harvest water, avoiding complex and energy-intensive vacuum chambers. Its technology uses advanced regeneration techniques and solid sorbent materials to generate distilled water on site. According to Water From Air, this system can operate independently of local water sources, providing net-zero-water cooling and supporting low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) without the water demand of traditional evaporative cooling methods.

The company claims that the integrated approach can lower cooling costs, reduce peak energy demand by shifting thermal load away from chillers and cooling towers, and produce high-purity water suitable for reuse in data center cooling or other applications. These capabilities aim to address the dual challenges of water and carbon footprint reduction, intensified by the scale of AI infrastructure growth, rising utility costs, and regulatory constraints.

Regarding technical details, Priyanka Kompella, Chief Operating Officer at Water From Air, said, “We’ve developed breakthrough technology that – for the first time – captures water at low temperatures and ambient pressure.” She continued, “Our technology uniquely closes the loop between energy, cooling, and water by transforming what was once waste into resilience, all without complex and expensive vacuum systems.” Romain Tranchant, Chair of the Innovation Committee at Infrastructure Masons, added, “Water From Air’s transformative technology – producing clean water directly from the atmosphere – tackles one of the most urgent global challenges: sustainable resource management.”

Water From Air states that its technology is engineered for data center operators seeking to improve sustainability, reduce water and power constraints, and generate distilled water on site—without increased energy consumption or additional chemical processing.
