Knowles launches safety-certified high-voltage ceramic capacitors for data center applications

Knowles has announced a new line of X1/Y2 safety-certified surface-mount multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), offering electrical engineers additional options for high-power, compact power electronics. According to Knowles, this capacitor family supports voltage ratings between 310 V rms and 500 V rms, including what it claims is the first class Y2 MLCC on the market rated up to 500 V rms.

Technical features of these safety-certified MLCCs include:

  • Voltage ratings up to 500 V rms
  • Maximum capacitance value of 12 nF in the 310 V AC class Y2
  • Minimum creepage distance of 5 mm designed into a 2720 case size
  • DC voltage ratings up to 1,500 V in compliance with EN60384-14 Annex H
  • Humidity grade IIIB rating (operation at 85°C/85% RH for 1,000 hours)
  • Operating temperature range from -55°C to 125°C

The new MLCCs are AEC-Q200 qualified and are available with a flexible termination option using Knowles’ proprietary FlexiCap material. Applications explicitly highlighted by Knowles include electric vehicle onboard chargers and data center servers, where transient voltage and electromagnetic interference must be reliably mitigated in high-voltage power electronics designs.

Nan Zhang, Director and Product Line Manager for Ceramic Capacitors at Knowles, stated, “With our newly expanded portfolio of enhanced safety-certified MLCCs, electrical engineers designing the high-voltage power electronics required for applications ranging from electric vehicle onboard chargers to datacenter servers can reliably mitigate the effects of transient voltages and electromagnetic interference, ensuring safe operation.”
