OpenAI and NVIDIA announce 10 gigawatt AI data center partnership

OpenAI and NVIDIA have announced a letter of intent to form a strategic partnership focused on deploying at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems for OpenAI’s next-generation data center infrastructure. The collaboration will be used to train and run OpenAI’s future artificial intelligence (AI) models, with the goal of enabling large-scale, advanced AI workloads. NVIDIA reports that it intends to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI as each gigawatt of infrastructure is deployed.

According to the companies, the first gigawatt of NVIDIA systems is planned to be operational in the second half of 2026 and will use the NVIDIA Vera Rubin platform. This marks a significant commitment of AI-specific compute resources, with the partnership representing millions of NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs).

OpenAI notes that it will designate NVIDIA as its preferred partner for compute and networking as it expands its AI factory capability. The two companies will align their technology roadmaps, coordinating OpenAI’s model and infrastructure software development and NVIDIA’s hardware and software advancements. This data center partnership with NVIDIA will complement OpenAI’s existing collaborations with companies such as Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank, and Stargate partners.

The agreement emphasizes data center scale and high-density AI compute, targeting service delivery for enterprise, small business, and developer applications. The intent is to provide AI infrastructure for broader use and rapidly advance model capabilities.

“NVIDIA and OpenAI have pushed each other for a decade, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthrough of ChatGPT,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “This investment and infrastructure partnership mark the next leap forward — deploying 10 gigawatts to power the next era of intelligence.”

OpenAI plans to finalize partnership details with NVIDIA in the coming weeks.
