Silicon Motion introduced the MonTitan SSD Reference Design Kit (RDK) for AI infrastructure at FMS 2026, pairing the platform with the company’s next-generation PerformaShape technology. The MonTitan RDK is aimed at “Agentic AI” deployments, where Silicon Motion describes enterprise SSDs taking on a persistent memory role to support KV cache offload and autonomous AI agents, with an emphasis on predictable QoS, sustained performance, and endurance for always-on workloads.
The company’s framing is that agent-style inference changes storage behavior versus more traditional AI pipelines. In this model, AI agents continuously operate across multi-step inference, retain context, and interact with external tools, which Silicon Motion says produces diverse data types and rapidly shifting access patterns. That, in turn, pushes enterprise SSD requirements toward high throughput, consistent latency, predictable QoS, and durability under sustained, write-intensive operation.
PerformaShape’s update centers on a hardware architecture Silicon Motion says is designed for “Multi-Dimensional Shaping,” intended to provide more precise workload management under complex, fast-changing conditions. Silicon Motion also called out integrated performance monitoring and use of NVMe TP4176 as an API interface for the shaping and monitoring functions, with the goal of maintaining predictable QoS for multi-tenant and multi-agent use cases.
For data center engineers, the key practical point is that this work targets QoS behavior, not peak throughput headlines. If you’re trying to keep inference latency stable while multiple agents and tenants compete for storage, the control plane around latency consistency and contention is often the harder problem than simply adding more SSD bandwidth.
“AI agents require storage to evolve into a persistent memory layer that retains context and supports continuous autonomous operations,” said Jason Chien, Senior Director of Enterprise Product Marketing at Silicon Motion. “Featuring next-generation PerformaShape technology, our new MonTitan SSD RDK combines enhanced hardware and software to efficiently manage data flows across multiple agents, reduce resource contention, and accelerate time to market for Agentic AI storage solutions.”
Silicon Motion said PerformaShape has been designed into its SM8366 PCIe 5.0 and SM8466 PCIe 6.0 enterprise SSD controllers, and that the MonTitan SSD RDK is built on those platforms to give SSD manufacturers a scalable foundation for AI server and data center storage development.
