SolarEdge Technologies has announced a technical collaboration with Infineon Technologies to develop its solid-state transformer (SST) platform for next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) and hyperscale data centers. The companies report the focus of this partnership is a modular two to five megawatt SST building block, combining Infineon’s silicon carbide (SiC) switching devices with SolarEdge’s power conversion and control topology. According to the announcement, the platform is designed to achieve greater than 99 percent electrical efficiency for direct current (DC) data center infrastructure.
The SST technology under development is intended for future high-efficiency 800 volt DC data center architectures. It enables direct conversion from medium-voltage alternating current (AC) input (13.8–34.5 kilovolt) to 800–1500 volt DC output. According to SolarEdge and Infineon, anticipated benefits include reduced transformer weight and size, lower carbon emissions, and accelerated deployment when connecting grid infrastructure to data center power distribution.
The announcement states that SolarEdge’s expertise in DC architecture aims to optimize end-to-end power distribution from grid to compute racks in data centers, addressing rising power demand driven by AI workloads. The SST, powered by Infineon’s silicon, silicon carbide, and gallium nitride semiconductor technologies, is intended to provide scalable, reliable power delivery and support operational cost reductions for large-scale data centers.
Shuki Nir, CEO of SolarEdge, said, “The AI revolution is redefining power infrastructure,” adding, “It is essential that the data center industry is equipped with solutions that deliver higher levels of efficiency and reliability. SolarEdge’s deep expertise in DC architecture uniquely positions us to lead this transformation. Collaborating with Infineon brings world-class semiconductor innovation to our efforts to build smarter, more efficient energy systems for the AI era.”
Andreas Urschitz, Chief Marketing Officer at Infineon Technologies, commented, “Collaborations like this are key to enabling the next generation of 800 Volt DC data-center power systems and further driving decarbonization,” followed by, “With high-performance SiC technology from Infineon, SolarEdge’s proven capabilities in power management and system optimization are enhanced, creating a strong foundation for the efficient, scalable, and reliable infrastructure demanded by AI-driven data centers.”
