Supermicro announces 6U SuperBlade with Intel Xeon 6900 CPUs for high-density data center compute

Supermicro has announced a new 6U SuperBlade system, the SBI-622BA-1NE12-LCC, a high-density blade server enclosure powered by dual Intel Xeon 6900 Series processors. Supermicro says the design targets maximum compute density and efficiency for modern data centers, with configurations that support both air cooling and direct liquid cooling.

The 6U enclosure is designed to fit a standard 19-inch rack with a 32-inch depth, which Supermicro says eliminates the need for a deep rack. Supermicro also says the platform reduces cabling by up to 93 percent and uses up to 50 percent less space versus traditional 1U servers. The chassis supports air cooling in a five-node configuration and liquid cooling in a 10-node configuration, with direct liquid cooling options including CPU-only cold plates and CPU, DIMM, and voltage-regulator-module (VRM) cold plates.

For compute density, Supermicro says SuperBlade supports dual Intel Xeon 6900 Series processors, with up to 128 performance cores (P-cores) per CPU and up to 500 W thermal design power (TDP) per CPU. Supermicro says a single 6U enclosure supports up to 10 blades and can scale to up to 25,600 cores per rack, and up to 100 servers per rack. It also says the enclosure uses shared power supplies and fans, plus integrated chassis management and networking, to concentrate performance into a smaller footprint.

Management features are provided through the SuperBlade chassis management module (CMM), which Supermicro says enables remote control of individual blades, power supplies, fans, and networking switches. Supermicro says the CMM supports power capping and per-blade power allocation, remote reboot and reset, and remote BIOS and operating system console access via Serial over LAN (SOL) or embedded keyboard-video-mouse (KVM). Supermicro also notes the controller runs on a separate processor so monitoring and control operate regardless of CPU operation or system power-on status.

At the blade level, Supermicro lists memory support for up to 24 dual inline memory module (DIMM) slots per blade, with up to 3 TB of 6400 MT/s Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) registered DIMM (RDIMM) or 1.5 TB of 8800 MT/s DDR5 multiplexed rank DIMM (MRDIMM). Storage options include up to four Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) 5.0 Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) solid-state drives (SSDs), two hot-swap E1.S SSDs, and two M.2 SSDs. For expansion, Supermicro says the platform supports three PCIe 5.0 x16 cards, with examples including three 400G InfiniBand or Ethernet adapters, or one 400G InfiniBand or Ethernet adapter plus two graphics processing units (GPUs). The enclosure also includes two integrated 25G Ethernet switches with 100G uplinks, which Supermicro says supports high-speed networking while reducing cabling.
