Vertiv and Caterpillar partner on integrated data center energy and cooling solutions

Vertiv has announced a new strategic agreement with Caterpillar to collaborate on advanced integrated energy optimization solutions for data centers. The partnership focuses on combining Vertiv’s power distribution and cooling technologies with Caterpillar’s power generation systems, alongside expertise from Caterpillar’s subsidiary Solar Turbines. The goal is to deliver pre-designed, modular architectures that reduce deployment timelines, increase efficiency, and enhance resiliency for data center operations.

Technical details from the announcement specify that Caterpillar and Solar Turbines will provide solutions such as natural gas turbines and reciprocating engines to ensure scalable electric power and thermal energy via Combined Cooling, Heat and Power (CCHP) configurations. Vertiv will supply a suite of power and cooling infrastructure, delivered as modular, pre-engineered blocks, aiming to accelerate time-to-power and standardize implementation. The companies claim these validated, interoperable systems are designed to optimize energy performance and simplify data center buildouts.

The primary target application is for onsite data center energy generation and cooling, addressing growing needs for reliable, efficient power infrastructure that lowers Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). Vertiv and Caterpillar both emphasize accelerated deployment and long-term support through their established global service networks. Other relevant industries, such as industrial manufacturing and energy, are also addressed by Solar Turbines’ mid-sized gas turbines according to the announcement.

“This collaboration with Caterpillar and Solar Turbines is a cornerstone of our Bring Your Own Power & Cooling (BYOP&C) strategy and aligns seamlessly with our grid-to-chip framework by offering resilient, on-site power generation solutions. This is optimal for customers looking to reduce or eliminate grid dependence,” said Gio Albertazzi, CEO at Vertiv. “By combining our complementary technologies, portfolios and expertise, we are enabling coordinated integration. Our pre-engineered, interoperability-tested building blocks let customers execute design, build and deploy concurrently, with predictable system performance.”

“As AI-driven workloads continue to accelerate, the demand for robust and scalable power infrastructure and cooling is becoming increasingly critical,” said Jason Kaiser, group president of Caterpillar Power and Energy. “Our collaboration with Vertiv will enable us to deliver integrated, on-site energy solutions that lower PUE and meet customers’ evolving needs.”
