Soluna and Siemens launch 2 MW behind-the-meter data center power controls pilot to manage AI GPU load swings

Soluna has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Siemens to deploy and validate a behind-the-meter power-and-controls approach designed to manage rapid, GPU-driven swings in power demand from AI and high-performance computing workloads powered directly by renewable generation. Soluna says the work targets stability and power-quality challenges that can show up when variable, high step-change loads run behind the meter at renewable energy sites.

Soluna reports the pilot will be sized at 2 MW and is expected to be deployed at Soluna’s Project Grace site in Texas. The companies say the deployment will integrate Siemens electrical infrastructure, controls, and monitoring, and will use a structured commissioning process to document performance under fast load steps and variable compute demand.

Soluna says Project Grace will be equipped with Siemens electrical and mechanical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, power converters, and ancillary systems. According to the announcement, the pilot will test this equipment in a behind-the-meter environment and establish performance metrics aimed at scalability, grid stability, and energy efficiency. The facility will utilize the Siemens SICAM SCADA platform for monitoring and control.

Soluna says it will use the pilot to capture performance data and operational learnings under representative AI and high-performance computing workloads, with results intended to inform how the approach could be replicated across future behind-the-meter deployments at renewable generation sites. The companies also say they anticipate validating an enterprise-grade, repeatable blueprint combining Siemens power infrastructure and controls with Soluna’s renewable-first data center model.
