INNIO has secured an order for 450 MW of power infrastructure from an unnamed US-based energy company, aimed at supporting large-scale data center projects in North America with behind-the-meter generation. The deal centers on Jenbacher J624 containerized gas engines intended for prime power deployments where grid capacity and interconnection timelines are limiting new builds.
INNIO said the 450 MW firm order was booked in its third quarter of 2026, and that deliveries are expected by 2028. The company did not disclose the customer’s name, citing confidentiality practices common in the data center industry, and characterized the transaction as the customer’s first order at this scale.
For data center engineers, the noteworthy detail here is the size of the behind-the-meter buildout: 450 MW is large enough to anchor multiple high-density campuses, and it signals continued interest in on-site generation as a way to reduce dependency on constrained utility infrastructure. But “prime power” engine deployments also pull power generation and fuel logistics into the critical path, shifting reliability planning from the substation and UPS plant to engine redundancy, maintenance windows, and controls for fast-changing loads.
INNIO described the Jenbacher J624 as a containerized, fast-deployment platform designed for data center power. The company listed power density, ease of transport, containerization, load-following stability, and lower redundancy requirements as advantages for “very demanding AI data center load profiles.”
“AI is driving unprecedented demand for power, while grid constraints have become a critical bottleneck for data center development,” INNIO President and CEO Olaf Berlien said. “This order demonstrates that INNIO’s technology is part of the solution, enabling customers to deploy reliable, efficient, and sustainable power quickly and independently of grid limitations.”
