Rune has launched RELIC (Renewable Energy Linked Intelligent Compute), a modular compute system designed to be installed directly at solar generation sites to turn curtailed or clipped solar power into compute capacity. Alongside the product launch, Rune raised a $40 million Series A led by Spark Capital, with participation from Union Square Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Activate Capital, Committed Capital, Timeless Partners, and Logos Fund, bringing total funding to $53.5 million.
RELIC is intended to operate behind the meter at operating solar plants without a grid connection. Rune describes RELIC as “off-grid by design” and says it runs natively on DC, which it calls solar’s native output, to avoid AC conversion losses. Rune also says RELIC avoids transformers and utility approvals by not connecting to the grid.
On deployment timing, Rune says a RELIC unit can be installed in 60 minutes, and that compute customers can be energized in as little as six weeks from contract. The company also claims it can cut non-compute infrastructure costs by 85% versus traditional AI data centers, and cites “$620 million in savings on a 100 MW deployment.” Rune adds that RELIC “uses no water” and requires “no heavy site prep,” while capturing underutilized energy “without disrupting core plant operations.”
For data center engineers, the practical takeaway is straightforward: this is a bid to sidestep interconnect queues by putting compute where generation already exists, instead of waiting on transmission and utility work. But the model depends on how much consistent, usable behind-the-meter energy is actually available at a given plant and how that maps to compute demand—especially for customers that expect predictable capacity rather than opportunistic power.
Rune also disclosed a RELIC installation at a 200 MW solar facility in Texas, which it describes as live on an existing renewable asset with “no site modifications, no grid work, and no construction.”
“Every solar plant is a latent data center. The power is already there, sitting idle while AI labs wait years for grid connections that may never come,” said William Layden, co-founder and CEO of Rune. “We built RELIC to close that gap with compute that’s online in days, powered by energy the grid was throwing away.”
Rune said RELIC is live across initial clean energy partner sites and that it is expanding its pipeline of power partnerships and compute customers.
