CIX-NoVA launches new internet exchange in Northern Virginia data center market

Community IX has launched CIX-NoVA, a new Internet Exchange (IX) serving data centers in Ashburn and Reston, Virginia. This marks Community IX’s first entry into the Northern Virginia market, which it reports as the world’s largest data center and connectivity hub. Additional regional data center locations are reportedly under review.

According to Community IX, the company currently manages over 30 terabits per second of port capacity across its existing Internet Exchanges in South Florida and Atlanta. For CIX-NoVA, Community IX claims it has secured strong initial interest and has confirmed anchor participants for the new exchange.

CIX-NoVA is designed to enable internet service providers, content providers, and enterprises to exchange IP traffic efficiently and cost-effectively across multiple sites in Northern Virginia. The exchange currently accepts participants with networks located in Ashburn and Reston.

Technical details provided by Community IX specify the availability of new 10 gigabit and 100 gigabit port connections, which are being offered at no cost for the first year with a two-year agreement. The company also offers 400 gigabit port speeds, though these are not included in the promotional offer. Community IX states that detailed location and connection information is available on its website.

Randy Epstein, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Community IX, commented, “Since beginning operations in 2015, we’ve focused on providing a cost-effective, community-driven service to our membership and have experienced tremendous growth in Florida and later in the Atlanta Metro market.” He added, “Over the years, we’ve been asked what other markets we can offer our service and Northern Virginia has consistently come up in conversation.”

Community IX reports that it serves hundreds of networks throughout the Southeastern US, including internet service providers, content providers, cloud services, and enterprises. The organization claims current peak traffic across its exchanges exceeds five terabits per second, with over 30 terabits per second of port capacity installed systemwide.
