Avery Dennison has introduced a portfolio of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes designed for battery energy storage systems (BESS), targeting thermal runaway protection, high-voltage insulation, and no-cure assembly. The lineup includes functional bonding and protection tapes intended for use inside BESS modules, packs, and containerized units.
The tapes are aimed at applications where PSAs bond and insulate cells, thermal barriers, and electrical connections. Avery Dennison describes the products as adhesives engineered for thermal runaway protection, high-voltage insulation, and instant bonding without cure time.
On thermal runaway mitigation, the company is pitching PSA tape as a way to help integrate fragile thermal barrier materials—such as mica sheets, aerogel pads, and ceramic paper—into multilayer assemblies without those materials shedding fibers or crumbling during handling. Avery Dennison cites acrylic- and rubber-based adhesive options with its Flame Tough flame-retardant adhesive properties for these use cases.
For electrical insulation, Avery Dennison is positioning its Volt Tough dielectric tape solutions for BESS modules that “routinely exceed 1,000 V DC,” where arcing risk can exist between cells, busbars, cooling plates, and module housings. The company says its materials and adhesives are tested for breakdown voltage and dielectric strength using GB/T 1408.1-2016 and ASTM D3755 test methods, and that the tapes provide high dielectric strength at thin calipers.
The third focus is assembly speed and manufacturability. Avery Dennison points to PSA tapes delivering instant bonding for automated assembly lines, in contrast to liquid adhesives that require mixing, dispensing equipment, and cure time. It also highlights die-cut formats for precision, reduced waste, and camera or vision-system detectability using colored variants, along with automated assembly compatibility, dimensional precision for tight tolerances, and no volatile emissions (VOCs) or mixing equipment.
For BESS integrators and OEMs, tape choices can be a small line item with outsized impact on safety margins, voltage isolation, and throughput. But the real test will be how these tapes behave under the thermal cycling, vibration, and long service lives expected of containerized storage hardware.
“Avery Dennison PSA solutions help reduce flammability risks, enhance dielectric protection, and streamline design and assembly,” said Max VanRaaphorst, market manager for Avery Dennison eMobility, Automotive & Energy Storage.
Avery Dennison also says its applications engineering team provides material selection guidance, die-cut design optimization, and testing support for BESS applications. More information is available at Avery Dennison Performance Tapes for battery energy storage systems.
