Calpine finalizes 400 MW power supply agreement for Texas data center

Calpine has announced the completion of a 400 megawatt (MW) power supply agreement with CyrusOne, a global data center developer and operator. This agreement supplies power, grid connection, and land for a new CyrusOne data center adjacent to the Thad Hill Energy Center in Bosque County, Texas. The recently signed second phase adds 210 MW to the original 190 MW agreement, supporting a facility expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2026.

The deal leverages Calpine’s Powered Land Capabilities, a suite of products and services designed to meet the needs of large-scale, mission-critical users like data centers. The agreement includes coordinated operations between Calpine and CyrusOne to enhance grid reliability, with the potential for generation curtailment during periods of supply scarcity. Calpine claims these arrangements are intended to support both community and state-level grid stability and financial benefit.

Calpine’s Texas-based fleet, spanning 79 facilities with over 27,000 MW of generation capacity, is focused on fast-paced development projects for hyperscale data centers and other industrial-scale customers. The Powered Land Capabilities are positioned as supporting speed-to-market and operational reliability for hyperscale operators while maintaining grid predictability.

Eric Schwartz, CEO of CyrusOne, stated, “By expanding our agreement to 400MW with their Powered Land Capabilities, we’ve enabled a comprehensive solution for power, grid connectivity and site infrastructure, while maintaining our commitment to responsible energy use.” Andrew Novotny, President and CEO of Calpine, said, “One of the agreement attributes that we are most proud of is the ability for Calpine and CyrusOne to coordinate our operations to ensure grid reliability in times of supply scarcity.”
