HUBER+SUHNER highlights optical circuit switching for AI data centers

2025 marks the 25th anniversary of HUBER+SUHNER’s POLATIS optical circuit switching technology in test labs, telecom networks, and data center connectivity. The company reports that its POLATIS optical circuit switching technology is central to SCinet, the event’s high-capacity temporary network, and is featured in Drut Technologies’ photonic-native infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) environments.

According to HUBER+SUHNER, the POLATIS Series 6000 192×192-port optical circuit switch (OCS) is deployed within SCinet, enabling a software-controlled fiber layer with ultra-low insertion loss, dark fiber switching, and embedded software-defined networking (SDN) control. This functionality allows network engineers to rapidly establish, modify, or reroute hundreds of optical connections, supporting flexible, high-bandwidth performance for the event’s demanding infrastructure.

In AI data center environments, Drut Technologies is using the POLATIS optical switching platform to build a disaggregated, photonic-native infrastructure that virtualizes compute, storage, and acceleration resources. HUBER+SUHNER reports this enables operators to compose and reallocate resources in real time, improving utilization and energy efficiency while reducing operational complexity.

The company notes that POLATIS optical switches are designed for dynamic, scalable, and energy-efficient connectivity in diverse environments, covering applications from network monitoring and test lab automation to high-performance AI data centers.

“The need for flexible, high-bandwidth connectivity is increasing across every layer of the network, from test and measurement to commercial AI data centers,” said Drew Martin, Market Manager at HUBER+SUHNER. “By automating the optical layer, our POLATIS technology gives operators complete control over their fiber infrastructure reducing complexity, accelerating workflows, and supporting sustainable scalability.”
