Kioxia has introduced the KIOXIA LD4 Series, its first SSD in the E1.L form factor built with BiCS FLASH generation 8 QLC NAND. The drive targets hyperscale deployments looking to push more flash capacity into 1U server footprints, particularly for read-intensive storage tiers.
The LD4 Series is NVMe 2.0e compliant and uses a PCIe 5.0 interface at x4 lanes, with stated compliance up to 16 GT/s per lane. It also supports the Open Compute Project (OCP) Datacenter NVMe SSD Specification v2.6, aligning the drive with the mechanical, thermal, and management expectations common in OCP-influenced server and storage designs.
Kioxia is offering the LD4 Series in 15.36 TB and 30.72 TB capacities, and it also points to a “validated architecture” that enables scaling capacity up to 122.88 TB. The LD4 is a single-port design intended for hyperscale and data center-class servers.
E1.L matters in high-density racks because it’s a form factor built around packing more NAND into a serviceable, front-accessible device while staying within 1U constraints. But QLC’s fit still depends heavily on workload behavior and write amplification; for engineers, the real gating items tend to be endurance planning and how the platform manages sustained performance once the SLC cache is out of the picture.
Kioxia says the LD4 Series is currently sampling to select customers, with the note that these samples are “for functional check purposes only” and that specifications may differ in mass production.
