Vantage Data Centers has announced plans to build a second data center campus in Milan, Italy—named MXP2—supported by an investment of over €350 million (approximately $407 million USD). According to Vantage, the new campus is designed to support increasing requirements for high-density, scalable digital infrastructure, notably serving the needs of hyperscale operators and technology providers.
MXP2 will be located in Castelletto, roughly 15 kilometers from central Milan, and will consist of two data centers with a combined 32 MW of IT power capacity across an estimated 10,000 square meters (about 108,000 square feet). The first phase is scheduled to be operational in spring 2026. This expansion follows Vantage’s initial Milan campus, MXP1, bringing the company’s total planned capacity in Italy to 96 MW.
The campus is engineered with a focus on sustainability and stormwater management, incorporating seven types of nature-based solutions (NbS). These include permeable surfaces, sustainable urban drainage, vertical greenery, rain gardens, infiltration basins, and landscape integration to sustainably manage stormwater. The plans also call for a mitigation strip with mixed tree species and rustic meadows aimed at enhancing the ecosystem and supporting phytoremediation.
Vantage reports that its projects, including both the MXP1 and MXP2 campuses, have been acknowledged by the Italian government as “nationally strategic infrastructure investments” under Article 13 of Decree Law 104/2023. As part of this program, Vantage states it will invest around €4 billion (about $4.6 billion USD) in Italy and employ approximately 4,000 workers over eight years during campus construction, creating about 250 long-term jobs.
David Howson, president for EMEA at Vantage Data Centers, said, “Expanding our Italian footprint in Greater Milan marks a strategic move for Vantage. Milan’s extensive fiber network and position along major terrestrial backbones provide low-latency connectivity to key European hubs, including Zurich, Frankfurt and Munich,” adding, “The region’s expanding digital ecosystem and competitive market dynamics make it an ideal location for global hyperscale growth, and our investment in MXP2 underscores Vantage’s commitment to delivering world-class, sustainable data center solutions in this key market to enable cloud and AI technologies.”
