ZincFive debuts nickel-zinc UPS cabinet for AI data centers

ZincFive has announced the upcoming release of the BC 2 AI, a nickel-zinc battery-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) cabinet engineered for the power demands of artificial intelligence (AI) workloads in mission-critical data centers. The company says this system introduces advanced nickel-zinc (NiZn) battery technology to address the transient power surges and runtime requirements created by AI applications.

The BC 2 AI is based on ZincFive’s BC Series and is described as the industry’s first AI-optimized battery cabinet built for dual-mode operation. According to ZincFive, it supports both high-frequency, pulse-intensive loads typical of GPU clusters and AI training environments as well as conventional outage protection, all within a compact form factor. The system is equipped with a new 90 amp-hour NiZn battery optimized for high-intensity discharge cycles and an advanced battery management system designed for high AI pulse cycling.

ZincFive claims the BC 2 AI enables data centers to absorb sharp transient loads and manage dynamic power at the UPS level, easing the strain on upstream infrastructure. The product aims to decrease the need for UPS overdesign, lower capital expenses, and improve interactions with the electrical grid. The company highlights that, compared to alternative solutions, BC 2 AI achieves AI pulse-ready performance and runtime assurance in the same physical footprint as traditional IT UPS batteries, while other solutions often require two to four times the space to meet similar power surges.

The BC 2 AI features a compact, field-upgradable design intended to evolve alongside changing AI power requirements. ZincFive says the system targets hyperscale operators, colocation providers, and UPS original equipment manufacturer partners, offering a solution to support both modern AI infrastructure and traditional IT operations.

“AI is transforming the very foundation of data centers, creating new challenges that legacy technologies cannot solve,” said Tod Higinbotham, CEO of ZincFive. “With BC 2 AI, we are delivering a safe, sustainable, and future-ready power solution designed to handle the most demanding AI workloads while continuing to support traditional IT backup.”
