Semtech joins XPO MSA with 200G/lane driver and TIA ICs for AI optics

Semtech has joined the eXtra-dense Pluggable Optics Multi-Source Agreement (XPO MSA), aligning its optical interconnect IC roadmap with the group working on higher-bandwidth pluggable optics for AI network infrastructure. As part of that effort, Semtech is bringing a portfolio of 200G/lane modulator driver and transimpedance amplifier (TIA) ICs intended for XPO transceiver development and volume deployment.

The company’s XPO-targeted IC lineup includes quad, octal, and higher-density parts spanning both TIAs and Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM) drivers. Named devices include GN1834L and GN1834DL quad TIAs with 750 mm channel pitch, GN1838L and GN1838DL octal TIAs with 500 mm channel pitch, and GN42T380 octal TIAs with 375 mm channel pitch. On the modulator side, Semtech lists TN1877 (quad) and TN1887 (octal) MZM drivers with 625 mm channel pitch, plus the GN42M380 octal MZM driver with 375 mm channel pitch.

Semtech describes the family as offering multiple configurations for module and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design flexibility, high linearity, on-chip equalization, integrated telemetry, ultra-low latency, and high integration aimed at compact transceiver designs consistent with XPO form-factor requirements.

XPO matters because faceplate density and thermals are getting harder as AI fabrics push toward higher throughput per port while staying within switch power and cooling constraints. Moving to 200G/lane electrical interfaces increases per-module throughput, but it also tightens signal integrity and packaging margins, which is why the supporting analog front-end (TIA and driver) choices can become a gating item for module designers.

The XPO MSA is defining a 12.8 T high-density optical transceiver form factor for AI infrastructure. The current generation is specified at 12.8 T per module at 200G/lane and uses an integrated liquid-cooling design, with a roadmap outlined toward a future generation based on 400G/lane electrical interfaces.

“XPO represents an innovative and practical approach to addressing network density challenges while preserving the field-serviceability and configurability benefits of pluggable optics,” said Scott Schube, vice president of applications engineering and product definition at Semtech.
