aalo atomics to build fully modular nuclear reactor designed for data center power needs

Aalo Atomics has announced it will begin construction of its first Extra Modular Nuclear Reactor (XMR), designed to supply dedicated power to artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. The Austin-based company claims operational status for the XMR is targeted for 2026. With $100 million in new Series B funding led by Valor Equity Partners and participation from additional technology and energy investors, Aalo reports total funding now exceeds $136 million.

Aalo’s flagship product, the Aalo Pod 50 megawatt electric (MWe) XMR power plant, is purpose-built for data centers. Each Pod contains five fully modular Aalo-1 reactors, designed to scale easily to gigawatt-level capacity. The system features a compact footprint and does not require external water sources, which, according to Aalo, enables straightforward onsite deployment alongside hyperscale or colocation facilities. The Aalo-1 reactors use sodium as coolant and rely on low enriched uranium fuel (LEU+, UO2).

In January 2024, Aalo completed construction of a full-scale non-nuclear prototype and has started construction of a non-nuclear test site in Texas where it will test systems, including sodium-based cooling. The company opened a 40,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Austin in April 2024, which it will use to support anticipated production scale.

Aalo has also secured selection by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to test its Aalo-X experimental XMR at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) through the Nuclear Reactor Pilot Program. Aalo reports it has received site allocation from the DOE-Idaho office and an Environmental Assessment Determination from the DOE, which expedites its review process. The company has also been chosen as one of four partners for a project to develop up to 1 gigawatt of nuclear generation capacity at the Texas A&M RELLIS Campus.

According to Matt Loszak, Co-founder and CEO of Aalo Atomics, “Our unique approach of mass manufacturing modular nuclear plants, combined with our commitment to both safety and scalability, positions us at the forefront of this movement and ensures we are ready to meet this imminent market need at record speed,” said Loszak.
