Alpha and Omega Semiconductor launches 60 amp eFuse optimized for data center power protection

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor has released the AOZ17517QI series, a 60 amp electronic fuse (eFuse) in a compact 5 mm x 5 mm quad flat no-lead (QFN) package. According to the company, this new series is specifically optimized for 12 volt power rails in servers, data centers, and telecom infrastructure, offering high reliability for critical power protection.

The AOZ17517QI series uses Alpha and Omega Semiconductor’s advanced co-packaging technology, which integrates a high-performance integrated circuit (IC) with protection features and a high safe operating area (SOA) Trench metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET). The device achieves a low on-resistance of 0.65 milliohms, ensuring minimal voltage drop during operation and isolating loads from the main bus when switched off.

The eFuse includes features such as programmable overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, under-voltage lockout, over-voltage clamp, thermal shutdown protection, programmable soft-start, and startup SOA management. It delivers accurate analog current and voltage monitoring, and multiple eFuse devices can be paralleled for higher current applications, supporting concurrent operation and effective current sharing during system startup or hot-plugging events.

James Wang, Power IC Marketing Manager at Alpha and Omega Semiconductor, stated, “AOS’ ability to combine our advanced TrenchFET technology with our industry-leading IC technology enables us to provide a more compact, robust eFuse product solution that is optimized for the needs of today’s server designs,” emphasizing the shift from traditional hot-swap controllers and external discrete FETs to more compact eFuse implementations for high-reliability data center and telecom systems.

Technical specifications for the AOZ17517QI series include an operating range of 4.5 to 20 volts, a 27 volt absolute maximum rating, and a 32-lead QFN package. The devices are immediately available with a unit price starting at $1.80 in quantities of 1,000 and a lead time of 14 weeks.
