Bourns has introduced its 1202-P Series Surge Protective Devices (SPDs), engineered as hardwired Type 1 SPDs for enhanced protection in AC infrastructure applications. The 1202-P Series is designed to address growing industry requirements for service entrance, branch, and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) panels, with a focus on high resilience and fire safety.

The 1202-P Series features a thermally protected metal oxide varistor (MOV) mechanism, providing safe operation under extreme overvoltage by automatically disconnecting in response to overheating or Temporary Overvoltage (TOV) events. The devices deliver a nominal discharge current capability of 20 kA and an industry-leading maximum discharge current of 50 kA, according to Bourns. Compliance with UL 1449 5th Edition ensures the devices meet increased demands for resilient and safe power infrastructure, especially in sectors affected by renewable energy and smart grid deployments.

Additional technical features include built-in thermal protection that operates without requiring external line fusing or separate circuit breakers. The SPDs can be installed on the line side of the main service disconnect, complying with Type 1 SPD standards. The devices include LED indicators to notify users when internal safety fusing triggers, helping to minimize system downtime and providing instant operational feedback to maintenance teams.

The 1202-P Series holds an IP66/NEMA 4X enclosure rating for indoor and outdoor use. Product versions include a 120 volt root mean square (Vrms) model and a 120/240 volt split-phase option. Both versions are compliant with the European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive 2015/863 and are listed to UL 1449 5th Edition.
