PCIe 7 signal conditioning portfolio spans copper and optical links for AI racks

Astera Labs has rolled out its Aries 7 PCIe 7 signal-conditioning portfolio, spanning copper and optical interconnect options aimed at high-bandwidth, multi-rack AI systems. The lineup covers retimers, redrivers, cable modules, optical drivers, and optical transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs), with management and diagnostics tied together under the company’s COSMOS software suite.

Astera Labs says the Aries 7 portfolio is built to support PCIe 7 links “from chip-to-chip, box-to-box, and rack-to-rack,” including chip-down designs as well as smart cable modules and optics approaches such as near package optics (NPO) and linear pluggable optics (LPO). The company also frames Aries 7 as a single “toolbox” that can be applied where copper is practical and where optical reach is required.

On reach, Astera Labs puts the span at “centimeters of PCB trace to 50+ meters over optical cables spanning multiple racks.” That’s a meaningful design claim for PCIe in AI clusters, where link stability problems don’t just show up as “networking issues”—they can strand expensive accelerator capacity when a fabric can’t maintain clean, consistent connectivity at scale.

For system designers trying to keep options open late in a program, Astera Labs says Aries 7 Smart Retimers and Smart Redrivers support the OCP Signal Conditioner Standard Footprint. The practical implication is straightforward: if that footprint is adopted in a design, operators and OEMs can potentially swap signal-conditioning parts to meet changing reach or power targets without a full board redesign.

Astera Labs also points to prior platform validation for earlier generations, saying AMD and Intel have validated Aries Smart Retimers in production across platforms from PCIe 4 through PCIe 6, and that both companies are collaborating with Astera Labs on the transition to PCIe 7.

“The real question for architects isn’t retimer vs redriver, or copper vs optical: it’s whether they have one comprehensive toolbox with the optionality to pick the right tool for their evolving reach, density and power requirements,” said Adit Narasimha, senior vice president, Signal Connectivity Group at Astera Labs.

Aries 7 Smart Retimers, Smart Redrivers, Smart Cable Modules, and Smart Optical Driver and TIAs are expected to begin sampling in Q4 2026 to select hyperscale, OEM, and NPO customers, with broader availability anticipated as platforms complete qualification.
