Salgenx releases saltwater flow batteries for AI data centers

Salgenx has announced a grid-scale saltwater flow battery system intended to address energy storage challenges specific to AI-driven data centers. The company claims its technology enhances backup power, peak shaving, and operational resilience amid short AI hardware refresh cycles and long-term financial commitments typical in the sector.

According to Salgenx, key technical features of its saltwater flow battery include:

Peak demand management by absorbing power surges from GPU clusters and delivering conditioned power, reducing the need for grid upgrades, lowering peak demand charges, and protecting sensitive hardware against voltage instability.

Long-duration backup power capabilities without thermal runaway risk, allowing secure installation near GPU racks, transformer yards, or within cooling system environments due to non-toxic, non-flammable electrolyte.

A 20-year design life with unlimited cycle operation, attributed to the system’s decoupled power and energy components, and scalability without requiring full system replacement—contrasting with the typical two-year replacement cycle of AI GPUs.

Integration with heat and energy management; the battery system supports thermal recovery and connection with data center cooling loops, enabling the use of stored off-peak renewable energy and operation as a thermal buffer.

No lithium, cobalt, or rare minerals, reducing fire risk, insurance costs, hazardous-materials zoning issues, and supply chain constraints. Salgenx notes that its batteries are suitable for domestic manufacturing and use a US-based supply chain.

The company reports that its energy storage system is designed for hyperscale and colocation data center operators managing GPU-intensive workloads, targeting organizations seeking more predictable energy costs and reduced exposure to grid volatility, downtime penalties, and financial risk associated with long-term leases and fluctuating AI demand.

Salgenx notes that its technology may support both power and cooling infrastructure and is adaptable for integration into unified energy and thermal management platforms in data center environments.
