Garrett Motion deploys MEG turbochargers on Weichai large-bore engines for marine and data center backup gensets

Garrett Motion has announced the first commercial application of its largest MEG turbocharger platform, deploying it with Weichai’s next-generation large-bore engine programs for marine propulsion and power generation. Garrett says the launch extends its turbocharging technology into higher-power engine classes used in marine and industrial systems, including backup genset applications such as data center emergency power.

According to Garrett, the MEG platform is its newest and largest turbocharger line, engineered for large-bore engines and designed for marine propulsion, high-output power generation, and backup gensets. Garrett reports the platform supports multiple fuel types, including diesel, natural gas, and emerging alternative fuels, to help customers meet efficiency and emissions targets across different duty cycles and applications.

Garrett describes the MEG turbo as purpose-built for marine, genset, and industrial use cases, targeting improved fuel efficiency, extended operating cycles, and compliance with stricter global emissions standards. Garrett says the design focuses on higher efficiency, long-term reliability, and lower fuel consumption and lifecycle emissions, and it integrates optimized aerodynamics, high-temperature materials, and a modular architecture.

“This collaboration marks a key milestone in our long-standing partnership with Weichai Power,” said Olivier Rabiller, President and CEO of Garrett Motion. “It underscores Garrett’s growing presence in large-engine segments for marine and industrial applications with our MEG portfolio, as we apply proven technologies to new domains delivering high-performance, energy-efficient solutions for the future.”

Garrett notes it has worked with Weichai since 1998 across on-highway, off-highway, and industrial applications, and says the companies continue to develop next-generation powertrain technologies for global markets, supported by global networks and local presence in China.
