Coherent ships 980 nm uncooled micro-pump lasers for data center interconnect amplifiers

Coherent has announced single- and dual-chip uncooled 980 nm micro-pump lasers that deliver up to 700 mW per fiber output in a compact three-pin module package. It says the devices are designed for next-generation coherent transmission systems and ultra-high-density multi-rail optical amplifiers, targeting space-constrained deployments where higher amplifier output power is needed without increasing footprint or energy consumption.

Coherent reports that its uncooled single-mode micro-pump lasers deliver up to 700 mW output with less than 3 W of power consumption per fiber, and operate from -20 C to 85 C. Coherent also says the design eliminates the need for active cooling while maintaining performance and thermal stability, enabling denser and more energy-efficient amplifier designs for scale-across optical systems.

The company positions the micro-pumps for optical-network scaling driven by artificial intelligence (AI), cloud infrastructure, and high-capacity transport. For data center use cases, Coherent specifically calls out the demanding data center interconnect (DCI) application as a target for compact, high-density amplifier designs.

“Our latest high-power uncooled micro-pump lasers extend that legacy of innovation and enable customers to achieve density and performance levels that were previously unattainable in compact amplifier designs for the demanding DCI application,” said Madhu Krishnaswamy, Senior Vice President and General Manager – Telecom Transport Business Unit at Coherent.

Coherent says samples are available now, with volume production expected to begin in calendar Q2 2026. The company also notes it will show the products at OFC 2026 at Booth 1401.
