AI design automation cuts hyperscale data center modeling time by 8.5x

E-J Electric Installation Co used Augmenta’s AI-powered virtual design automation platform to complete initial model population for a 1M+ square foot hyperscale data center project 8.5x faster than its typical process. The company reported the work took 82 hours versus an estimated 693 hours under its usual approach.

The work focused on “initial model population,” a phase that creates a baseline 3D model used downstream for procurement, logistics, fabrication, and installation planning. For data centers, that early model fidelity is a practical lever: electrical scope is dense, highly coordinated, and schedule compression tends to ripple into prefabrication releases and field mobilization.

Augmenta’s platform uses interactive design tools to analyze and identify free space and obstructions within a project site. It also considers factors including labor and material cost to design and optimize the model, then generates a 3D model of the systems based on inputs from the engineering team.

Speedups like this are only as valuable as the quality of the output and how well it integrates with coordination workflows. But if the time reduction holds in real projects, it shifts effort from manual modeling toward coordination, shop drawings, and prefabrication—the steps that typically determine whether field crews get clean installs or rework.

“The 8.5x increase in modeling speed achieved on our most recent project represents a step change in efficiency and quality,” said Tom Kregel, Executive Vice President at E-J Electric. Kregel added that automation of time-intensive modeling tasks lets teams “focus on coordination, shop drawings, and prefabrication,” and “deploy larger numbers of field craft earlier in the project.”

Augmenta co-founder and CEO Francesco Iorio said the company designed Augmenta “in partnership with the industry,” and pointed to the hyperscale data center project as an example of pairing field experience with AI-based automation for electrical system design.
