Delta, X LABS MOU targets 100 MW solid-state transformers for AI data centers

Delta Electronics (Americas) has signed a memorandum of understanding with X LABS to collaborate on energy-as-a-service (EaaS) for AI data center projects, with plans that include deploying 100 MW of Delta solid-state transformer (SST) technology and a stated intent to eventually scale to gigawatt-level capacity.

Under the MOU, the two companies are expected to work together on supplying products and EaaS for AI data center builds. Delta’s SST technology is positioned as a replacement for conventional passive transformers, using digitally controlled power electronics intended to enable faster grid response and real-time voltage regulation as loads scale. Frank Duggan, chairman of X LABS and vice chairman of Hitachi Energy, tied the approach to the medium-to-low-voltage interface, saying Delta’s SST technology “sits at the AC/DC, medium-to-low voltage interface” and, paired with Delta’s “800VDC architecture,” provides “a grid-to-rack capability that is otherwise difficult to achieve.”

For data center operators, the practical question is whether these kinds of integrated power architectures can shorten the path from utility service (or behind-the-meter generation) to stable, high-density rack power without turning every deployment into a one-off integration project. As rack densities and cluster sizes rise, power availability increasingly becomes a gating item alongside, or even ahead of, compute delivery and commissioning schedules.

Delta said the SST approach draws on its existing microgrid deployments in the US, which it described as providing operational data on how SST-based systems perform under live, variable grid conditions, and the companies expect to apply that experience to X LABS’ “energy park design” as projects move from MOU toward deployment. William Mao, vice president of energy infrastructure at Delta Electronics Americas, said Delta’s SST technology and power buffering solutions “enable more efficient grid-to-chip power conversion and improved system-level flexibility.”

Mark Ko, vice chairman of Delta Electronics, and Karan Trehan, CEO and founder of X LABS, signed the MOU at Delta’s Fremont, California headquarters.
