Lambda has announced that it is one of the first artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure providers to integrate NVIDIA’s silicon photonics–based networking, also known as co-packaged optics. This approach targets performance bottlenecks in hyperscale GPU clusters by placing optical components directly next to network switches, as reported by Lambda and NVIDIA.
According to NVIDIA, the Quantum-X Photonics platform delivers 3.5 times better power efficiency, five times longer sustained application runtime, and 10 times greater resiliency compared to traditional pluggable transceivers. By optimizing signal integrity and reducing reliance on electrical interconnects, co-packaged optics support more reliable and power-efficient connectivity for large GPU deployments often found in data centers supporting AI model training and inference.
NVIDIA claims the new photonics networking features a simplified design with fewer components to install and maintain, targeting the operational demands of real-time AI and multi-site, large-scale GPU infrastructure. The technology’s primary application is supporting hyperscale data center operators, AI research labs, and enterprises running massive distributed GPU workloads.
Ken Patchett, VP of DC Infrastructure at Lambda, stated, “NVIDIA Quantum‑X Photonics is the foundation for high-performance, resilient AI networks. It delivers superior power efficiency, improved signal integrity, and enables AI applications to run seamlessly in the world’s largest datacenters,” Patchett added, “By integrating optical components directly next to the network switches, we believe our customers can deploy AI infrastructure faster while significantly reducing operational costs – essential as we continue to scale to support frontier AI workloads.”
Gilad Shainer, senior vice president of networking at NVIDIA, said, “AI factories are a fundamentally new class of infrastructure – defined by their network architecture and purpose-built to generate intelligence at massive scale.” Shainer continued, “By integrating silicon photonics directly into switches, NVIDIA Quantum-X silicon photonics networking switches enable the kind of scalable network fabric that makes massive-GPU AI factories possible.”
This collaboration builds on Lambda’s previously announced achievements within the NVIDIA ecosystem, including reaching NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud status and gaining multiple NVIDIA awards for large-scale GPU infrastructure.
