3M and Microsoft struck a strategic partnership that ties together AI data center infrastructure work in Microsoft Azure and 3M’s internal enterprise transformation efforts. Microsoft’s Azure Cloud and AI Infrastructure is the first announced hyperscale cloud provider to deploy 3M Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) technology in Azure data centers.
3M’s EBO replaces the direct-contact interface used in traditional fiber connectors with an expanded-beam optical interface. In data center terms, the pitch is practical: faster installation, more tolerance to contamination, and easier maintenance. Microsoft plans to use the technology to reduce the need for frequent cleaning and inspection while maintaining optical performance in dense, high-volume deployment environments.
Microsoft said its early use of EBO has shown the potential to reduce network deployment timelines in certain environments. Microsoft also said the technology has demonstrated strong signal performance in live data center conditions where dust exposure and routine handling are part of installation and maintenance.
For operators, the underlying idea is straightforward: anything that reduces fiber cleaning cycles and connector-related rework can shorten install windows and lower operational friction, especially as AI clusters drive more optics into tighter spaces. But “faster to install” only matters if the connector ecosystem scales cleanly across high-volume builds and standard operating procedures.
On the supply side, 3M said it’s scaling production of its EBO technology to meet demand from hyperscalers and data center operators building AI infrastructure. The company also said it helped establish the EBO Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) to support standardization and broader industry adoption of EBO technology.
“3M’s EBO solution will help unlock new levels of performance, reliability and efficiency to ensure customers can run their cloud and AI workloads on a trusted, sustainable and advanced environment,” said Cliff Henson, corporate vice president, Cloud Supply Chain, Microsoft.
Enterprise transformation work at 3M
Separately from the data center infrastructure work, 3M plans to use Microsoft AI and digital platforms across customer service, finance, sales, and marketing as part of its enterprise transformation roadmap. 3M and Microsoft are also collaborating on an AI agent-driven workflow to support credit checks, delinquency assessments, and system updates, with human-in-the-loop controls and a custom monitoring dashboard for real-time visibility and approvals.
Microsoft’s newly launched Microsoft Frontier Company is deploying engineers to work with 3M’s Global Business Services team on automating customer order management.
“Our collaboration with Microsoft supports that vision through targeted optimization opportunities for our enterprise while advancing the infrastructure needed to power the future of AI,” said Jon Van Wyck, executive vice president and chief strategy officer, 3M.
