Prometheus Fuels has demonstrated the use of carbon-neutral liquid e-fuel to power artificial intelligence (AI) systems entirely off-grid. In a recent demo, available on the company’s website, Prometheus used fuel produced at its pilot facility from carbon dioxide captured directly from the air and solar electricity to provide power for locally installed AI, without a grid connection and with full carbon neutrality.
This marks the first recorded instance of AI powered by an e-fuel derived entirely from air and renewable electricity. The e-fuel, known as solar e-methanol, is created using low-cost solar power and atmospheric carbon dioxide. Prometheus claims its solution bypasses grid interconnection challenges and eliminates reliance on traditional fossil fuels for data center power, enabling data centers to run with high reliability and off-grid independence.
Targeting the data center industry, Prometheus’ approach addresses rapid increases in power demand generated by AI workloads. The company reports that its liquid e-fuels can be stored on-site, transported as needed, and used in existing turbines and generators. According to Prometheus, these fuels can be deployed at gigawatt scale in under two years, as projects do not require grid connections or extensive permitting often associated with large-scale infrastructure.
Rob McGinnis, founder and CEO of Prometheus, said, “We’re offering a new source of power for AI,” and explained that, “We can turn the cheapest electricity in the world – solar power in the best locations – into 24/7 low-cost baseload power anywhere it’s needed.”
Prometheus states its commercial pilot production of e-methanol is already operational with full-scale components, and the company is now accepting orders for its AI power fuels. Additional technical details and ordering instructions are available at prometheusfuels.ai.
