Kioxia America has announced an expanded plug-in for RocksDB designed to improve the lifespan and performance of solid-state drives (SSDs) in multi-drive RAID configurations. The new plug-in, slated for open-source release in the first calendar quarter of 2026, will be demonstrated with the Kioxia XD8 Series SSD at the 2025 Open Compute Project Global Summit.
According to Kioxia, the plug-in optimizes write activity for RocksDB—a database widely used in data center, cloud, and generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications. The plug-in consolidates data writes so they occur sequentially, preventing fragmentation and reducing the need for garbage collection. In a four-drive RAID 5 configuration, Kioxia reports that the plug-in reduced the write amplification factor (WAF) by 46 percent and increased throughput by 8.22 times compared to MDRAID1. In a two-drive mirrored (RAID 1) setup, WAF decreased to one third while throughput improved by 1.45 times over MDRAID1. These results are based on Kioxia’s internal lab testing.
The enhanced plug-in will be shown at the OCP Global Summit in a live demonstration, highlighting performance and WAF improvements for a two-drive RAID 1 configuration compared to standard Linux RAID mirroring.
Kioxia plans to release the plug-in as open source and states that this initiative supports broader industry advances in SSD and flash memory technologies for modern computing and data center requirements.
