SMA launches grid-assist and MV UPS power designs for AI data centers

SMA Solar Technology AG is moving its Large Scale and Project Solutions business into data center power infrastructure, rolling out a dedicated portfolio aimed at AI and hyperscale builds. The focus is accelerating time-to-power with architectures intended to help developers and operators deal with grid interconnection timelines, grid stability requirements, and the need for scalable, reliable operation.

SMA is framing the offer around its utility-scale power conversion and grid-integration toolset, including medium-voltage power stations, controls, and system integration. The company points to capabilities spanning grid stabilization and grid-forming, battery energy storage integration, cybersecurity, power plant controls, and management of complex electrical infrastructures, and says it has deployed related technology at gigawatt scale worldwide.

The portfolio is built around three named solution architectures. SMA GridAssist is a battery-based architecture for grid-connected data centers, with load smoothing, power quality stabilization, and grid code compliance listed as target functions. SMA GridLink AC is positioned as a medium-voltage UPS architecture designed to decouple data center loads from the grid, with the stated goal of addressing interconnection challenges while maintaining stable operations.

The third option, SMA GridLink DC, targets “the industry’s transition toward 800 V DC-powered AI infrastructure.” SMA said GridLink DC is planned for deployment in 2027 and is designed to improve efficiency, scalability, and power availability from grid to compute while reducing technology and execution risks.

For engineers, the practical takeaway is that SMA is packaging grid-interaction and power-conversion building blocks into data center-specific architectures, including an explicit path toward 800 V DC. That matters because power delivery constraints and interconnection complexity are now gating factors on schedules, and architectures that change how the facility “looks” to the grid (and how sensitive the IT load is to grid behavior) can directly impact commissioning timelines and operational stability.

“Data center developers either pursue a grid connection, or collocation of new generation assets with their data center, or increasingly, both,” said Jay Arghestani, managing director of Sales, Technology and Marketing for Large Scale Solutions at SMA America. “And regardless of their decision, they must deliver reliable operation while facing complex compliance and stability challenges.”
