Veolia to operate 350 MW grid-independent microgrid for AI data center campus

Veolia has been selected by a major project developer to operate and maintain a 350 MW, grid-independent microgrid supplying power to an AI data center campus in New Albany, Ohio. The microgrid is intended to provide 100% of the site’s power without relying on the traditional electric grid.

The project pairs on-site generation with large-scale battery storage to support continuous operations. Veolia says it will handle operations integration, commissioning support, and long-term plant operations under a performance-based model designed to maximize uptime, asset performance, and operational accountability.

For data center operators, the engineering takeaway is straightforward: microgrids are becoming part of the “speed-to-power” playbook when grid interconnection timelines don’t match build schedules. But running a campus on independent generation changes the operational profile, shifting risk into fuel supply, controls integration, maintenance execution, and black-start and islanding procedures—areas where O&M discipline matters as much as the nameplate MW.

The Ohio system is expected to integrate gas engines, linear generators, battery energy storage systems, and medium-voltage infrastructure into a coordinated platform. Veolia was brought in before commercial operations to support startup readiness, operating procedure development, and coordination among multiple contractors and OEMs working under compressed construction timelines.

Veolia lists these project metrics: 350 MW generation capacity, a 430 MWh battery energy storage system, a 99.9% availability target, and 35 to 40 full-time on-site personnel, with a dedicated 24/7 workforce.

Veolia said the work builds on its Data Center Resource 360 offer launched earlier this year.
