Ecolab's $4.75 billion acquisition of CoolIT Systems gives the industrial water and hygiene giant a direct play in data center liquid cooling. KKR, which backed CoolIT, made roughly 15x on the investment.
- CoolIT specializes in direct-to-chip liquid cooling for high-density GPU racks. Its cold plate technology is deployed at hyperscale and enterprise facilities worldwide
- The deal values CoolIT at about 20x forward revenue, a premium that reflects the liquid cooling market's growth rate
- Ecolab brings water treatment and thermal management expertise. The company sees data center cooling as a natural extension of its existing industrial water business
- The global liquid cooling market for data centers is projected to hit $15 billion by 2030, up from roughly $3 billion in 2025
- CoolIT competes with Vertiv, Motivair, and GRC. The Ecolab acquisition gives it a balance sheet and distribution network none of those rivals can match
