Data center cooling loads targeted with new Nostromo Energy thermal storage system

Nostromo Energy has announced the launch of IceBrick360, a cold-thermal energy storage system engineered for high-demand data centers in the US. According to Nostromo Energy, IceBrick360 is designed to increase load flexibility for data centers, helping expedite grid connections and allow facilities to increase IT capacity.

The IceBrick360 offers a 360 ton-hour (360 TRh) storage capacity per unit, specifically addressing the sizable cooling loads in data centers—loads that may represent 10 to 30 percent of peak electrical consumption. The system builds on the compact Gen 2 IceBrick design, delivering the same market-leading performance with a larger configuration for faster placement and integration during construction. Nostromo Energy reports IceBrick360 enables data centers to shift cooling energy use to off-peak times by charging with off-peak power and discharging stored cold energy when facility demand is high, thus reducing peak load on the grid without affecting compute operations.

The system features up to nine times the energy density per square foot, offers a four-hour discharge for aligning with peak-demand windows, and supports automated integration with utility signals for demand-response and wholesale market participation. IceBrick360 has been approved as a standalone demand-response resource by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and California Independent System Operator (CAISO). Built entirely in the US, the system helps reduce supply chain risk and may qualify installations for a 10 percent Investment Tax Credit (ITC) adder—potentially raising overall federal tax credits for eligible projects up to 40 percent.

Nostromo Energy claims the approach allows for rapid deployment since the non-flammable design avoids permitting delays typical of lithium-ion battery storage. The company states that IceBrick360 is backed by a 10-year warranty and is engineered for over 20 years of daily use with minimal performance degradation.

“The IceBrick360 is a game-changer for an industry held-back by power constraints,” said Yoram Ashery, CEO of Nostromo Energy. “It offers a fast and reliable pathway to increased grid connection and IT capacity. As a non-flammable solution it does not need complex permitting like lithium-ion batteries, reducing deployment time and risk. Backed by a 10-year warranty and engineered for more than 20 years of daily use with virtually zero degradation, IceBrick360 provides unparalleled peace of mind and long-term value.”
