Airedale by Modine launches stainless steel TurboChill DCS chiller for liquid cooling data centers

Modine has announced a new stainless steel variant of its Airedale by Modine TurboChill DCS chiller, specifically engineered for high-density data center applications such as direct liquid cooling (DLC) in artificial intelligence workloads at hyperscale, colocation, and neo-cloud facilities. This design delivers the hydraulic capacity needed for advanced DLC deployments and aims to optimize Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) while freeing up white space by removing the need for in-row coolant distribution units (CDUs), according to Modine.

The TurboChill DCS Stainless Steel chiller features a corrosion-resistant interface for the facility water loop, which is designed to enhance circuit cleanliness and improve overall system reliability by reducing contamination and cold plate build-up. It supports high-pressure environments and maintains integrity under extreme thermal loads, offering precise fluid management and filtration capabilities based on the product details provided in Modine’s announcement.

The chiller is engineered for global use, meeting Seismic Design Category D requirements, and is optimized to operate at ambient temperatures up to 55°C (131°F). It utilizes the low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant R1234ze (GWP 1.37) and incorporates Turbocor oil-free centrifugal compressors for efficiency across both full and part load. The modular V-frame coil design integrates Airedale’s Enhanced Free Cooling technology, employing larger diameter fans to cut energy use.

Modine states that by integrating the TurboChill DCS Stainless Steel chiller within optimized liquid cooling architectures, operators can remove in-row CDUs from high-density data halls. This simplification is expected to reduce system complexity and open up space for additional IT racks.

“By combining superior corrosion and build-up resistance with optimized thermal performance, our TurboChill DCS Stainless Steel delivers exceptional reliability for mission-critical environments,” said Art Laszlo, Group Vice President, Global Data Centers. “Its advanced design can eliminate the need for a CDU in high-density, liquid-cooled applications, simplifying infrastructure and reducing operational complexity.”
