STL introduces world’s slimmest 864F IBR fiber cable for data center and hyperscaler connectivity in the US

Sterlite Technologies, through its US subsidiary STI, has announced the development of an 864-fiber optical cable with a diameter of 11.7 mm, targeting data center operators, hyperscalers, and telecom service providers in the United States. STL claims this Celesta Intermittent Bonded Ribbon (IBR) Cable achieves high fiber density and is optimized for jetting into ducts with a 14 mm inner diameter.

The Celesta IBR Cable uses STL’s bend-insensitive HD G.657.A2 200-micron fiber and industry-standard sheathing. According to STL, the cable demonstrates jetting performance of approximately 1,500 meters (about 4,700 feet) in under 20 minutes. It is designed for installations requiring both high fiber count and compact dimensions, such as connecting equipment within racks or for outside plant deployment between distributed data centers.

The cable supports mass fusion splicing and features a ribbon bond design that increases packing density while keeping the overall diameter low. STL notes that the Celesta cable meets ICEA 122-744 standards, is GR 20 compliant, and can be installed in 14/18 mm micro subducts. Testing was conducted in line with International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) compliant track configurations.

STL reports that its IBR cable portfolio ranges from 12 to 6,912 fibers. Over the past five years, it claims to have delivered more than 10 million fiber kilometers to customers in Europe and the US. STL operates 10 manufacturing facilities across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Dr. Badri Gomatam, CTO at STL, stated, “Our breakthrough Celesta IBR cable is a testament to STL’s commitment to advanced engineering and customer-centric innovation,” and continued, “By delivering industry-leading fibre density and bend performance in a remarkably slim design, we’re empowering hyperscalers and data centres to scale up efficiently and sustainably—laying the foundation for next-generation digital infrastructure.”
