AI UPS deployment to start in 2026 across 5 GW of Crusoe campuses

Crusoe and ON.energy are partnering to deploy 5 GW of ON.energy’s AI UPS across multiple hyperscale campuses, with commissioning set to start in 2026 and continue into 2027.

Both companies are targeting a power-quality problem that’s becoming more visible as AI training clusters scale: synchronized GPU ramps that drive fast load swings. Crusoe and ON.energy describe those swings as occurring hundreds to thousands of times a day, with the potential to propagate through the point of interconnection and add stress to grid equipment if the facility doesn’t manage them internally.

ON.energy’s AI UPS is a patented, medium-voltage uninterruptible power system designed to sit inline between power sources and an AI data center. The companies say the system “decoupl[es] the facility from the grid” so it can ride through voltage faults without disconnecting, while also preventing internal GPU-driven load swings from affecting the grid.

For data center operators, that architecture is a direct response to a growing operational constraint: it’s not just about having enough megawatts at the fence, it’s about how the load behaves once thousands of accelerators start moving in lockstep. If interconnect requirements increasingly push large loads toward ride-through and power-quality expectations, the electrical design has to treat “grid-facing behavior” as an engineered outcome, not a byproduct.

The companies also say AI UPS has been validated against ERCOT’s Large Load Interconnection requirements, including compliance with NOGRR 282 and ERCOT’s Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) protocols, which ERCOT has proposed as a baseline for large-load interconnection in Texas. They add that the system “stores enough energy to power an entire campus for extended durations,” and that this can “significantly” reduce grid variability during peak hours.

“We evaluated the full landscape of power solutions with one priority in mind: reliability at hyperscale for the data center while ensuring stable, predictable behavior for the grid and the communities around these campuses,” said Chris Dolan, Chief Data Center Officer of Crusoe.
