EPC eval board converts 800 VDC to 12.5 VDC at 6 kW for AI racks

Efficient Power Conversion (EPC) has detailed the EPC91123 evaluation board, an 800 VDC-to-12.5 VDC, 6 kW isolated converter aimed at emerging 800 VDC server architectures for AI infrastructure built on NVIDIA MGX. EPC is contributing GaN-based power conversion designs to the NVIDIA MGX AI Factory ecosystem, targeting higher power density, improved efficiency, and rack-level power delivery for next-generation AI deployments.

The EPC91123 is designed to convert directly to 12.5 V and remove a 48 V intermediate stage. EPC puts the resulting system-level efficiency improvement at 1% to 2% by reducing conversion stages. The converter uses an input-series, output-parallel (ISOP) LLC topology and EPC’s Gen7 devices, including the EPC2366 (40 V, 0.8 mΩ, 3.3 mm × 2.6 mm) and the EPC2305 (150 V, 2.2 mΩ).

On efficiency, the board is specified at 98.2% peak efficiency and 97% full-load efficiency. Mechanically, EPC describes a compact form factor for space-constrained AI servers: 104 mm × 47 mm × 8 mm.

For data center power architects, the key point is the direct 800 VDC-to-12.5 VDC step-down at 6 kW. Eliminating an intermediate bus can simplify the power chain and reduce cumulative losses, but it also puts a lot of pressure on magnetics design, isolation, and thermal performance at high step-down ratios. ISOP LLC is one way to split the problem into manageable building blocks while keeping switching losses under control at these power levels.

“AI data centers consume tremendous amounts of power, making it critical to reduce power conversion stages to improve efficiency and power density, especially in 800 V architectures,” said Alejandro Pozo, Director of DC-DC System Engineering. “The ISOP topology is particularly well suited for high step-down-ratio power conversion, enabling improved transformer optimization and interleaved operation. It has been selected for our next 800VDC to 6VDC platform.”

EPC also said it is developing conversion architectures spanning 800 VDC to 48 VDC, 12 VDC, and 6 VDC to address different AI infrastructure requirements. “NVIDIA MGX provides a modular foundation for scalable accelerated computing… We are pleased to contribute to the NVIDIA MGX AI Factory ecosystem with advanced multi-level GaN-based power conversion solutions designed to support emerging 800 VDC server architectures and next-generation AI infrastructure,” said Alex Lidow, CEO and Co-founder of EPC.
