Philatron launches halogen-free 125°C power cables for AI data centers

Philatron announced Philaflex-HF-125 halogen-free power cables that the company positions for AI data center applications requiring continuous +125°C cable operating temperature. The PR argues that higher cable temperature ratings are increasingly relevant as data centers shift toward higher-density, higher-power AI infrastructure, where localized heating and sustained utilization can push beyond the limits of common 60°C to 90°C cable ratings.

Philatron says the Philaflex-HF-125 insulation is “created for Continuous Operating Temperature of +125°C” and that it meets ASTM D794 for +125°C continuous use temperature. The company also states that its Philatron-HR125 insulation meets ASTM D746 for a -49°C brittleness temperature. On safety, the announcement describes the cable as halogen free and LSZH (low smoke, zero halogen), claiming it “emits no corrosive byproducts” in a fire scenario and “significantly less smoke” for improved visibility, while emitting “no toxic gases.”

The PR also lists UL standards the cables are designed to conform to: UL 1277 tray cables, UL 83 thermoplastic-insulated wires and cables, UL 62 flexible cords and cables, and UL 758 appliance wiring material.

On the technical rationale, Philatron points to AI workloads running GPU clusters “at near-peak utilization for extended periods,” which it says can create sustained electrical stress and continuous heat generation that “can exceed the limits of standard 90°C rated cables.” It also cites localized hotspots near “high-current connectors and busbars,” even in efficiently cooled environments, as another driver for higher temperature-rated insulation.

The PR contrasts the Philaflex-HF-125 insulation against PVC and XLPE. For PVC, Philatron says standard PVC cables may be rated 60°C to 90°C, but continuous operation near the upper limit reduces service life, and that prolonged heat exposure “typically above 60°C to 70°C” can reduce insulation integrity, increase deformation, and raise electrical failure risk. It also claims PVC can degrade adjacent plastic connectors and switchgear components due to release of corrosive hydrogen chloride as PVC heats up, “especially above 100°C.” For XLPE, Philatron states a maximum continuous temperature of 90°C, with a short-term emergency operating temperature limit of 105°C for not more than 72 hours on average per year, and it highlights concerns about thermal expansion and contraction contributing to interface weakness and partial discharge inception.

Philatron frames Philaflex-HF-125 as a way to reduce maintenance cycles, replacement costs, and operational downtime by combining “high-temperature insulation performance,” LSZH characteristics, and mechanical durability, but the announcement does not provide pricing, part numbers, or an availability timeline.
