Schaeffler’s current-insulating bearings protect critical HVAC systems

In modern data centers, HVAC systems are a mission-critical infrastructure that maintains thermal stability across densely packed IT environments. To achieve high efficiency, operators increasingly rely on variable-frequency drives (VFDs) to control fan, pump, and compressor motors. While VFDs significantly reduce energy consumption, they also introduce electrical shaft currents that can damage conventional motor bearings. Schaeffler addresses this reliability risk with a portfolio of current-insulating bearing solutions specifically designed for electrically stressed HVAC applications.

Electrical erosion caused by stray currents can lead to fluting, pitting, and premature bearing failure—often without obvious early warning. In data center cooling systems, such failures can trigger unplanned outages, reduced cooling capacity, or cascading equipment stress.

Schaeffler’s current-insulating bearings, including hybrid ceramic bearings and bearings with advanced ceramic insulation coatings, are engineered to block electrical current flow through the bearing. This prevents surface damage while preserving mechanical performance under continuous, high-load operation common in data center environments.

By electrically isolating motor shafts, these bearings enable data center operators to fully leverage VFD-driven efficiency gains without compromising reliability. Improved bearing life reduces maintenance frequency, lowers spare-parts consumption, and minimizes the risk of HVAC disruptions that could impact server uptime. This is especially valuable in large air-handling units, chilled-water pumps, cooling tower fans, and compressor systems that operate around the clock and are difficult or costly to service.

Beyond current-insulating bearings, Schaeffler supports data center HVAC reliability with a broader portfolio of condition-based maintenance and lubrication technologies. These include wireless condition-monitoring systems that track vibration and temperature in fans, pumps, and gearboxes, enabling early detection of imbalance, misalignment, or bearing wear. Schaeffler also offers automated and smart lubrication solutions that ensure consistent lubricant delivery to critical components, reducing friction, extending service intervals, and supporting continuous operation in hard-to-access cooling infrastructure.
