Atomica has launched its AI Thermal Microstructures Platform, a microfabrication offering aimed at building thermal-management structures directly into advanced AI packages and related hardware. The target is high-density AI compute and photonic systems where localized hotspots and steep thermal gradients are increasingly hard to handle with external cooling approaches alone.
AI Thermal Microstructures Platform is positioned as Atomica’s fourth AI infrastructure platform, following its AI Optical Connectivity, AI Optical Source, and AI Photonic Integration platforms. Atomica describes the thermal platform as a set of microfabricated building blocks intended for package-level thermal control, including microfluidic cooling, thermal pathways, interposers, sensing structures, bonding, and wafer-level packaging.
Those elements are intended to support functions such as routing coolant close to hotspots, spreading heat, monitoring pressure and flow, isolating temperature-sensitive components, and integrating thermal control features within advanced packages. In practical terms, that puts the thermal problem in the same design space as the package itself, which is where power density is concentrated and where thermal resistance budgets are often spent fastest.
Atomica lists use cases spanning liquid-cooled AI accelerator modules, GPU and chiplet packages, high-bandwidth memory integration, photonic interposers, optical engines, co-packaged and near-packaged optics, external laser source systems, rugged edge-AI systems, industrial electronics, defense systems, and high-reliability sensor modules. The company also points to optical integration as a driver, noting that as lasers and optical engines move closer to processors and switches, temperature gradients and thermal drift can affect performance and stability.
“That changes how thermal management has to be designed,” said Eldon Klaassen, CEO of Atomica. “The industry has traditionally attacked the problem from the outside with heat sinks, cold plates, and airflow. As packages become denser, more of the thermal solution has to be built into the package itself.”
Atomica says customers can start with feasibility structures or thermal test vehicles and move through engineering samples, functional prototypes, qualification lots, and scalable production.
