Floating offshore wind pilot targets 800 kW off-grid AI compute

Exascale and EnergyBank have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore grid-independent AI compute infrastructure powered by floating offshore wind paired with long-duration energy storage. The collaboration contemplates an initial pilot tied to Zephyros-One, a floating offshore wind turbine operated by Sustainable Energy Norway, targeting up to 800 kW of firm, compute-ready power.

The companies said the pilot would include deployment of Exascale’s modular data center as part of an integrated system that combines offshore generation, storage, cooling, and compute. Beyond the pilot, Exascale and EnergyBank intend to develop a repeatable reference architecture for larger projects, with potential future configurations “targeting up to 10 MW of firm compute capacity per turbine” in multi-turbine, multi-module builds.

For data center engineers, the practical question isn’t the MOU itself—it’s whether the offshore package can deliver stable power and operate reliably enough to be treated like a real capacity block. “Firm” output from variable generation implies substantial storage, controls, and power-conditioning capability, and offshore operations add hard constraints around service access, spares, and mean time to repair that don’t look like a typical land-based modular deployment.

EnergyBank is expected to fund the initial pilot through a combination of private investment and potential public funding opportunities. Exascale CEO Hoansoo Lee said, “AI infrastructure growth is not constrained by the lack of availability of advanced chips. Rather, it is due to the inability to secure and deliver power at the required scale and within commercially viable timelines,” adding that the plan is to build an off-grid system that can “deliver compute-ready power without waiting years for a grid connection.”

Under the MOU, the parties intend to conduct joint technical feasibility work, define a reference architecture for the pilot, and create a roadmap for scaling beyond the pilot. The MOU does not obligate either party to proceed; any pilot or subsequent deployment remains subject to further technical evaluation, definitive agreements, financing, and applicable regulatory and other approvals.

Exascale describes itself as an AI infrastructure provider with Token Factory GPU-as-a-Service, plus modular data center, high-density cooling, HVDC power, and energy storage solutions aimed at AI deployment bottlenecks. EnergyBank is developing long-duration energy storage technology for offshore floating wind, with operations in New Zealand, Norway, and the US.
