Diraq to deploy 8-qubit silicon spin quantum computer at Equinix Sydney data center

Diraq plans to deploy a silicon spin quantum computer inside an Equinix data center in Sydney, Australia, aiming to run a quantum system in a shared commercial colocation environment alongside conventional IT gear. The companies say the installation is on track to be completed in October 2026.

The system is built around a silicon chip containing eight qubits, with cryogenic cooling and control electronics described as self-contained. Diraq and Equinix say the complete system fits within Equinix’s existing data center footprint “like any other rack,” requires minimal integration, and draws less than 20 kW of power.

One practical implication for operators is that the integration challenge shifts away from facility retrofits and toward operational questions: how a cryogenic quantum system behaves under real data center constraints like shared services, remote access, and security controls. Diraq and Equinix explicitly frame the Sydney deployment as a testbed for running the system with open network connectivity, remote monitoring, and secure integration with classical CPUs and GPUs.

The companies also describe the deployment as an early step toward hybrid quantum-classical workflows inside the same facility, with Diraq planning to explore how quantum computing and AI systems “can work together as both technologies scale.” After testing, Diraq intends to give industry partners and customers an opportunity to see the system operating in the Equinix site, which the companies characterize as meeting enterprise requirements around data sovereignty, security, and compliance.

“Quantum computing’s future depends not only on breakthroughs in hardware, but on proving how these systems can operate within the digital infrastructure enterprises rely on every day,” said Jarrod Nink, managing director, Australia, Equinix. Diraq founder and CEO Andrew Dzurak added: “The data center is where quantum computing goes mainstream, and that shift starts now.”

Beyond the Sydney deployment details, Diraq describes its approach as silicon-based and manufactured using existing CMOS processes, with a roadmap toward scaling qubit counts by replacing the chip while keeping the surrounding system and infrastructure unchanged.
