Tektronix ships regenerative 800V DC power test system up to 1.92 MW

Tektronix has introduced the EA-ELR 21000 Dynamic Test System, a fully regenerative, auto-ranging electronic load platform aimed at validating ±400 V and 800 VDC power architectures used in AI data centers. Instead of dumping absorbed energy as heat, the system regenerates power back to the grid at up to 95% efficiency, a practical lever for running sustained high-power validation without scaling lab cooling and facility power in lockstep.

The system is built around the new EA-ELR 21000-80 4U HS module, a 30 kW regenerative electronic load rated for up to 1,000 V and up to 80 A. Tektronix positions the platform at a moment when AI-related load profiles are driving faster and larger power transients through power shelves, power racks, and upstream infrastructure.

For data center power engineers, the spec sheet here is about two things: dynamic behavior and test practicality. The EA-ELR 21000 system is specified for up to 12 A/µs of current slew rate at 240 kW to emulate rapid load transitions. Those kinds of edges are where droop, recovery, and stability problems show up, and they’re easier to catch in the lab than after a power architecture is committed to hardware.

On the scaling side, the EA-ELR 21000 supports up to 1.92 MW of modular test capacity across up to eight racks and 64 loads, expanding in 30 kW increments. Tektronix lists each rack at up to 240 kW, with a 0.6 m² footprint. Integrated waveform generation is included for repeatable load profiles, and coordinated controls are designed to let multiple loads operate as a synchronized system. The modular design is also meant to allow servicing individual modules without taking down the full test setup.

Tektronix says the platform is designed to test 800 VDC distribution power shelves and power racks, and also solid-state transformers used to convert medium-voltage AC for high-power DC infrastructure. The company frames the goal as evaluating dynamic behavior, stability, conversion efficiency, and long-term reliability before deployment in AI data centers.

“AI is making power architecture a strategic design decision,” said James Hitchcock, Vice President and General Manager of the EA Portfolio at Tektronix. “The systems built for earlier generations of compute were not designed for the scale or pace of today’s AI workloads.”

Tektronix also said it plans to introduce the EA-ELR 20080-1000 4U HS later this fall, an 80 V, 1,000 A regenerative electronic load module intended for validating the 48 V to 54 V rail. The EA-ELR 21000 Dynamic Test System and EA-ELR 21000-80 4U HS module are available now for purchase.
