Chemours Opteon immersion cooling fluid qualified for Samsung data center SSDs

The Chemours Company has announced that Samsung Electronics has successfully qualified its Opteon two-phase immersion cooling fluid for use with current-generation Samsung solid state drives (SSDs). This qualification represents the first time Samsung has approved a two-phase immersion cooling fluid for its SSDs, which are frequently deployed in high-performance data center environments.

According to Chemours, the qualification process involved rigorous performance and compatibility testing with Samsung’s fourth-generation SSDs. The company states that the Opteon fluid met or exceeded all compatibility and reliability targets, showing no signs of degradation. This testing was conducted in collaboration with tank manufacturer Liquid Stack and semiconductor and data center specialist PKI Corporation using a 48U commercial-scale immersion cooling tank.

Samsung has established its own high-reliability test standard based on Open Compute Project (OCP) benchmarks. Opteon is the first two-phase immersion cooling technology to pass this standard, with further testing planned for Samsung’s fifth and sixth-generation SSDs. Samsung also notes it has developed a method using Opteon fluid that provides high heat transfer efficiency and reliability for immersion-cooled systems. The company reports that this process is designed to accelerate future liquid cooling qualifications across multiple portfolio areas, including SSDs, double data rate (DDR) memory modules, and logic device packages.

Chemours reports that Opteon two-phase immersion fluid allows for a power usage effectiveness (PUE) approaching 1, with performance improvements versus traditional and other liquid cooling methods. The company claims this solution nearly eliminates water use, reduces space requirements by 60 percent, cuts overall energy use by up to 40 percent, and lowers cooling-related energy by up to 90 percent.

Sungki Lee, Project Leader of SSD HW Reliability Engineering Team at Samsung Electronics, said, “As digital infrastructure continues to evolve to meet the demands of AI and high-performance computing, compatibility is king,” adding, “After nearly a year of testing, the Opteon two-phase immersion cooling fluid met or exceeded all compatibility parameters. We look forward to our continued collaboration as we qualify our generation five and six SSDs.”
