PDM unveils advanced VFI transformer to boost data center power protection and uptime

Power and Data Management (PDM) has launched the VFI Transformer, a medium voltage padmount transformer designed with integrated vacuum fault interrupter technology and advanced relay systems. PDM says the solution is tailored to the requirements of hyperscale data centers and environments with increasingly dense compute and power loads.

The VFI Transformer combines vacuum fault interrupters and advanced relays to provide medium voltage overcurrent protection, real-time monitoring, automated reset functionality, and arc flash mitigation. According to PDM President and Co-Founder Jake Ring, “We integrate vacuum fault interrupters and advanced relays into our new medium voltage VFI padmount transformers, enabling not only overcurrent protection but real-time monitoring, automated reset, and arc flash mitigation.” PDM claims this feature set helps operators rapidly detect and isolate faults, determine trip causes, and assist with safe recovery procedures.

PDM highlights technical features such as breakers that minimize nuisance trips, relay-driven arc flash mitigation, and transformer ratings above 3000 kVA for high load environments. The system supports loop-feed configurations and concurrent maintainability, which PDM notes are important for multi-megawatt hyperscale facilities.

The integrated protection architecture aims to reduce personal protective equipment requirements, lower arc flash risk during maintenance, and limit the need for on-site technical intervention during outages thanks to remote diagnostics and reset capabilities.

PDM reports a nine-week delivery period for its VFI Transformer, comparing this to typical industry lead times ranging from 50 to 105 weeks.

PDM specializes in manufacturing transformers and circuit breakers for data centers, colocation providers, enterprises, and utilities, with US-based operations and partnerships that enable built-to-spec products.
