Constl, a subsidiary of Space World Group, has announced the deployment of Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optics across its network in India, following a successful live trial that achieved a 1 terabit per second (Tbps) line rate on a single optical channel over the 1,450 km Mumbai–Chennai route. This marks India’s first commercial deployment at this capacity without the need for regeneration, according to the companies.
The solution enables Constl to double the per-wavelength fiber capacity from 800 gigabits per second (Gb/s), previously possible with WaveLogic 5 Extreme, to 1.6 terabits per second (Tb/s) using WL6e. The upgrade also improves spectral efficiency and reduces cost per bit and power consumption, according to Ciena. The platform is designed to deliver high-capacity 800 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) services and support the stringent requirements of hyperscalers operating and expanding data centers in India.
Targeted at hyperscalers, telecommunications providers, and content delivery networks, Constl claims the upgraded network is positioned to support high-capacity, AI-driven data center interconnectivity. The company notes its pan-India backbone currently extends over 12,000 km and connects around 100 data centers across 13 cities.
Ankit Goel, Chairman and Founder of Space World Group, stated, “Since inception in 2023—just two years ago—Constl has deployed over 12,000 km of fibre and connected around 100 data centers across 13 Indian cities, powered by Ciena’s industry-leading optical technology. This milestone positions us to expand our terrestrial fibre network and deliver high capacity 800GbE services for the AI era.”
Amit Malik, Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific, Japan and India at Ciena, added, “Constl is committed to developing networks tailored to hyperscaler requirements, and Ciena’s coherent optics are recognized as the best-in-class platform for high-capacity AI services. Together, we are driving next-generation connectivity to support India’s digital future and AI ambitions.”
